Centre for Population Research Profile


As part of its Policy to encourage research in Demography, the Department of Family Welfare, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India has established POPULATION RESEARCH CENTRES in the major states of the country. These Centres are established in reputed Research Institutes and Universities that provided the necessary infrastructure facilities, as parent Institutes. The Population Research Centres (PRCs) work as autonomous research institutes with 100 percent financial support from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

The PRC, Visakhapatnam is one of the 18 such Centres established in 1978 at ANDHRA UNIVERSITY. The main task of the Centre is to undertake research on various topics pertaining to population stabilization, demography, socio-demographic surveys and family welfare programmes in Andhra Pradesh. This Centre also undertakes independent and in-depth evaluation of the Family Welfare Programme in Andhra Pradesh to give feed back to the Department of Family Welfare, Government of India.

The specific objectives of the Population Research Centre are: (a) to undertake fundamental as well as policy oriented research in the field of population; (b) to study the impact of economic and social change on the population growth of Andhra Pradesh; (c) to collect and analyse primary data on fertility, mortality, migration and family welfare evaluation on a sample basis in Andhra Pradesh, and (d) to take-up special studies as may be entrusted by the State and Central Government from time to time.


  • Observation of WORLD POPULATION DAY on 11th July every year.

  • Participation as Resource Persons in Training Programmes of Health Functionaries at District and State Level.

  • Extending data support to Researchers from different Departments of the University and outside.

  • Participation in Regular Monthly Meetings conducting by Senior Regional Director, Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India on Review of HMIS Data Quality in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States.

  • Monitoring of DLHS/NFHS in Andhra Pradesh.


The most important large-scale surveys participated/taken-up by the PRC are National Family Health Survey (NFHS), funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Rapid Household Surveys under Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) project funded by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. In addition to these, the PRC also carried out Baseline and Endline Surveys for the RCH-Sub project of the state Government of Andhra Pradesh.

PRC also carried out an evaluation study on the functioning of ANM Schools funded by State Governments and Private Organizations. PRC is also involved in Monitoring of the DLHS-4 Project in Andhra Pradesh and was also involved in Evaluation of the Dhanalakshmi Scheme for Girl Child in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The PRC is currently involved in carrying out Monitoring of Programme Implementation Plans (PIP) in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha apart from other studies related to health care. In addition, PRC is monitoring HMIS data in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and participating in the monthly review meetings conducted by Senior Regional Director, Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. So far, this research centre has completed 139 research studies on health and family welfare.
